Be Active in Your Learning Process -- Three Tips to Energized Learnin

As a strong believer in life-long learning and a coach who specializes in change and growth, I’m always
impressed at the genuineness and tenacity of self-proclaimed life-long learners.  These knowledge-hungry
individuals are focused, energized, and love to soak up new ideas!  Not only that, many are able to
quickly put new concepts and suggestions into practice at work and in relationships.  What helps you get
the most out of personal education, training programs, coaching, and university studies?

Moving Towards
When starting a new educational activity, you create more commitment and excitement about learning
with a “moving towards” frame of mind, rather than a “moving away from” mindset.  Let’s say Bob has
decided to learn ballroom dance.  He can “move towards” the lessons because he wants to get fit, impress
his girlfriend, and is curious about different types of music.  Or he could be “moving away from” his mother’
s continual harping about “learn to dance” for his brother’s wedding.  He might “move away from” an
uncomfortable meeting on Tuesdays by scheduling a class at the same time.  Positive motivation has a
longer lasting effect than negative motivation.  In what frame of mind do you learn and perform better –
by “moving towards” or “moving away from”?  Which way draws out your natural enthusiasm and relaxed
fun?  At times you need to ask yourself, “What am I running from?”, and then turn to step in the direction
of your own truth.

Support Structure
People who are very effective learners have outstanding support.  Maria will be attending UCI next fall
and has prepared her family for her time away. On Tuesdays and Thursdays she’s set up babysitters for her
two children. She’s also blocked off a weekly 4-hour study period at the library. When moving into a long-
term learning commitment – whether a new career or starting a business – be sure to thoroughly think
about what you need. Time. Money. Support from friends and family. Transportation. Envision your new
daily schedule.  Tell your loved ones about your new education desires; listen to how it might impact
them too. Let these support structure ‘needs and expectation discussions’ be a stimulus for openness,
encouragement, and self-confidence.

Align To Your Passion and Purpose
Do you find yourself thinking about taking an accounting class because you heard that CPA jobs are
available, yet you hate numbers, calculations, and sitting at a PC?  Or perhaps you just agreed to start a
roofing business with your neighbor, but you have no interest in the industry and don’t like the marketing
role in which he “placed you”!  A goal of many of my clients is to live their purpose, live with passion, and
live a fulfilled life.  Don’t make the mistake of spending weeks, months, years of doing something that you
hate, being stressed or uncomfortable.  I recall a high school friend who barely passed his classes, D-
average. Three years later he was the top student in a prestigious recording engineer training program.
Why? He was passionate about it. Don’t underestimate the depth of learning, not to mention immense joy
that can be found by living your purpose with passion.

When you (1) naturally “move towards”, (2) create a supportive environment, and (3) are passionate about
an area of life, there exists a thirst, a drive, a hunger for learning.  Challenge yourself to live from that
place of authenticity TODAY!
