A Half-Year Gone or A Half-Year Left?
by Theresa J. Swift, July 1, 2009

It’s been six months since many of you named goals for the year.  Do you remember what they were?
Recall your resolutions way back in January?  Perhaps your desire was to lose weight and get fit, take a
college course, or to find a new, fun hobby to do with your spouse.  Maybe your goals were more
internally focused, such as overcoming an unhealthy way of thinking, starting a gratitude journal, or
changing your communication style during arguments.  I invite you today to take a quick “status check”
and make a few adjustments if needed.  Too often what you meaningfully intend gets waylaid by other
“life stuff” happening.  Where have you been focusing your time and energy these last six months?

Give yourself a personal gift of time right now -- 15 minutes -- to do your “status check”.  First, recall those
things you set out to do for the year.  Think about them and feel their importance to you now.  Do you still
want them?  Given where you are today, and any new factors in your life, are they still priorities for this
year?  I encourage you to write down the areas and goals that are important to you.  The likelihood of
accomplishing your intentions increases if you write your goals down and share them with others.  For
those important goals, ask yourself, “How far along am I to reaching my goal?”  Give each item you listed
a 0 to 10 rating.  If you haven’t started on the resolution at all – mark down zero.  For goals that are almost
complete -- whether it’s an on-going type of goal, e.g., a new habit formed that you don’t have to think
about any longer, or one with a concrete end point, e.g., moved into new house -- give it a 9 or 10.

Second, for each goal written get a good sense of the strength of your determination.  While working with
athletes and competitive Dancesport couples, I find these individuals are very determined to “win”; to
place higher in competitions, run faster, hit farther, work together easier.  There’s a passion, a drive, a
determination to improve, grow, succeed … whatever it takes to reach the goal.  It’s a great model from
which to learn.  Which of the goals on your list are you truly committed to and really want -- with “heart”?
Dig deep and listen to your inner self.  For
these goals -- the ones that call to you, move you, make you
come alive – for the goals you
really want, place a star by them.

Finally, for these starred items, figure out what assistance you need.  Great things are not accomplished
very often in isolation.  I want you to think of “assistance” in a new way; a way that is wide, crazy, different,
and
larger than you would normally do or ask for.  Assistance could mean friends who support you, task
reminders, rewards for completion of steps, funding, daily motivation, accountability structures, quiet
time, coaches, practice space, expertise, etc.  What will it take? What “assistance” do you need to reach
the next level?  For each starred item, write down three “assistance” sources.  Start today to find and
connect to those “assistance” sources.

The cup’s half-full.  Six months left to achieve your important, personally fulfilling annual goals.  Yes, it’s
do-able!
